Question re upgrade to sim only

Two year ID contract ended today. Followed the upgrade process, chose a SIM only deal. Had to enter payment card details. Now I got an email saying they’re dispatching my new SIM. Why do I need a new SIM?  Same phone, same number, same ID. Can’t I just continue with my existing SIM. I’m away from home till can return without quarantining
