I have tried some suggestions I’ve seen that say to disable iMessage (on my iphone) turn off phone, remove SIM card and turn back on. But this doesn’t work. My new number is according to the iD app successfully ported, but yet the number on my phones settings says the number iD gave me.
I can’t make calls/texts only iMessages (when that’s turned on).
any suggestions?

Have you tried a Network Reset?
If you’re using iOS 15 or later then:
This will also reset any Wi-Fi networks and passwords, mobile data settings, and VPN and APN settings that you've used before.

But the reason I noticed I wasn’t getting messages is I’m not getting verification codes coming through which I’m still not despite the above working and updating my number correctly. Can you advise on that?

It seems it can take up to 48 hours after your number port completes for SMS send and receive to work reliably.
If the issue with verification codes continues, you’ll need to ask an iD agent to check your network account, and make sure your port was completed properly.
