Twitter has unveiled its new Snapchat-like camera for Android and iOS. Find out what you can expect from Twitter’s new integrated camera...

Twitter’s new camera is ready for action

It’s been in the works for a while now, but Twitter finally rolled out its new integrated Snapchat-like camera. The feature will be available on Android and iOS mobile apps, where users will be able to take and share pictures instantly, within the app.

Tweeting using the new camera

If you’ve already been lucky enough to receive the update, you will now be able to swipe left from your main timeline screen in the app, and you’ll open a dedicated camera screen. This then allows you to take a photo, video, or live stream straight to all your followers with Capture and Live Capture.

In Capture, just tap to take a photo or long press to shoot a video, while Live will start broadcasting straight away. For even more customisation, you can overlay the image/video with text, your favourite hashtags or a location, and you can also turn the flash on/off when you need extra light.

Will my tweets look different?

When you post a tweet using their latest feature, it appears like a thumbnail or an enlarged photo, and any related text will be below it. This is a first for the social media platform, who have always been a primarily text-based social network, but since the explosion in popularity for image sharing – Snapchat and Instagram for example – it’s no surprise that a little bird told them to get on board.

Previously, users had to concentrate their thoughts into 280 characters (originally 140), but now they can allow a picture to, as they say, speak 1,000 words. Any pictures or videos that you want to share that aren’t taken through the app can’t be shared here though, you’ll still have to do the usual way when sending regular tweets. But, that should encourage people to share more pictures and videos from live events, as they happen.

The first time you use this new camera update, Twitter will ask you for permission to access your media files. Don’t worry, it’s nothing sinister, just authorise it and you’ll be sharing instant pictures and videos in no time.

What are your favourite pictures and videos from Twitter's new camera? Let us know in the comments.
