cancellation of sim only contract

I want to cancel my sim only contract. I haven't used the sim in the new phone I got and I don't want to or can't register because it sends a code to the phone number that I'm not using. How can I simply cancel my contract? Aware that it's going to be tricky contacting customer services given the high volume of calls at the moment. Can I just email and cancel?
