I am currently on holiday in America and have realised that I have not had the phone set up for a different country. And now I have lost services to it. And I need urgently to to reply (by text which I can still receive).
Any suggestions about the best thing to do next would be very gratefully received.

Have you tried checking the Featured topic on the side?
It'll provide you with the steps required to prepare your phone for Roaming abroad.
