Question

4G router - DNS settings

I have recently purchased the unlimited data iD mobile sim-only plan, for use in my 4G router (TP-Link MR6400). Unfortunately, I am running into two issues:

  1.  My Amazon Echo device will not connect to the 4G router when using the iD mobile SIM, despite having no issues when connecting to the internet via 4G whilst using a mobile hotspot running on other networks.
  2.  The bigger issue, when using the iD Mobile SIM in the 4G router, I am unable to load work related webpages (currently working from home). After numerous attempts to resolve this, the firms IT team believe it is DNS related issue, and likely the same thing causing issue 1 above. However it appears that DNS settings can not be changed when using a 4G router.

I would be interested to know if anyone has had similar issues when using an iD Mobile sim in a 4G router, or if anyone has any suggestions as to what could resolve either issue.

Hi there @nickivey

Is the iD Mobile SIM in the TP-Link router itself?  Or are you tethering to that device?

If you’ve only just bought this SIM and these sites/ devices have never worked then my hunch is that they never will and that this TP-Link router device in question is not something we don’t officially support on our network, unfortunately.

Which SIM deal was it you selected off our website?  we may be able to find out more from there.

Hi Kevin,

Thank you for responding.

For clarification, the iD SIM is in the 4G router. It works perfectly for most things (connected to mobile devices, smart TV etc. with no issues). I only run into problems with the two points previously mentioned.

On the Amazon Echo point, in order to rule out a router issue as opposed to the SIM, I removed the SIM from the router, put it into a mobile device and attempted to connect via the mobiles personal hotspot. This again failed, despite there being no issue when doing this on other networks. As such, I’m fairly confident this is an issue on the iD network side.

On the second point, my firms IT specialists again came back to me today re-affirming their belief that the issue is due to the network essentially forcing specific DNS settings, which in turn do not allow connection to firm related sites.

The SIM is on the unlimited £18/month deal.

Cheers,

Nick

What error message do you get when you try to load the firm related websites @nickivey?

It’s not randomly being flagged as “adult” is it?  As you might be able to alleviate that aspect by turning off Adult content filtering in your iD Mobile App if it’s along those lines.

Hi @Kevin,

There is no ‘error’ message as such, the page simply attempts to load for a while before saying the webpage couldn’t be loaded.

I did have that thought regarding adult content filtering. I switched it off yesterday and to my bemusement, after another three attempts to connect my Amazon Echo, it actually worked on the third attempt. It hasn’t lost connection since, so that issue at least appears to be resolved. Unfortunately, still no luck with the firm related sites.

OK, so the partial fix is odd, but we’ll take that.

Working from home ourselves at the moment, we’re finding certain applications only open on certain browsers. Have you tried opening the ones failing on different browsers @nickivey?

Did you ever get to the bottom of this?  I had a problem when I was with Three, my Philips Hue bridge would not connect to the internet.  I managed to find a website that talked me through changing the DNS settings for DHCP clients via a hidden option on my 4G router.  I changed the DNS from that of the router(192.168.x.x) to that of Google DNS (8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4).  Once I did this my Philips Hue Bridge connected fine.

Weird really as after finding out what the Philips Hue was trying to query both the router(192.168.x.x/Three DNS) and Google DNS resolved the address no problem

Just wish I knew the problem as seems more than DNS to me.
