I just can't get started with my first ID PAYG deal

I inserted my new sim card in an existing mobile but the front page said NO SIM.  The signal around  here is good and the phone concerned has been using an ID nano sim for the last 3 years.  I rang Carphone Warehouse who told me that it would take 24 to 48 hours for the phone to be connected.  There was no mention of this on the very simple leaflet.  Then I went on to the ID Chatbot who eventually told me that I had to top up the account before the phone would be connected.  However, I have to register first and that is the only way I can buy top up.  BUT you can’t register without a phone number  -and of course I haven’t got one yet.  These mixed messages are no help to a novice.  Any help out there would be just great.
