Dashboard minutes available but cannot call

I have contract with 500 mins to which I added another 500 mins, making 1000 in total. the 500 add on minutes have 'expired' and my account Dashboard now shows 116 mins left but when attempting a call I get an automated voice message saying I have no minutes left. So why does my dashboard still say 116 mins?

Minutes on the dashboard did reset to zero but much later (several hours) than the actual time I lost the ability to make calls. Would be good if the dashboard was updated in line with reality.
