I want to upgrade daughter's phone as Christmas present. Can she still use old SIM and phone til then? How will the bill be worked out. I want to buy the phone now to get the best deal but it won't be used until Christmas day. Also, will she get notifications to her phone about the upgrade? I don't want this to happen obviously as it would spoil the surprise. Any advice appreciated, thanks.

Once you purchase the upgrade, the plan will change as soon as the order has been processed so you can order it now however the plan will kick in before she uses the phone. Information about the change is often sent to the phone via SMS and the allowances will also change (if you select a different amount) so there is a high chance she will find out.
As a way to cover it up, you could always tell her that you are changing the plan only and not mention a new phone?
