I just received a new sim card to upgrade. However, I went through the activation process with the old sim card in. I then put the new sim card in. It says it takes upto 24 hours to activate. Does this mean I cannot use my phone until then as it is telling me NO SERVICE. I cannot make calls.

Whilst it may take up to 24-hours, in almost all cases it’s done right away.
Try restarting your phone and the new SIM should be active.
