Upgrade to sim only

Hi, My contract is coming to end so can upgrade but still very happy with my phone, so was looking at the sim only deals. Are these sim only contracts signed in for 12 months, asking as thinking what if i decide to change my phone in 6 months time but cant if the sim only contract is for 12 months
