cooling off 30day period help. can i upgrade the phone ? and keep account open

HI, I have taken out a iPhone 6s for my son who suffers with type 1 diabetes and has autism. He is having a blood monitor fitted that we can monitor 24-7 and needs the phone for this to work. We have now only been told by the hospital that the software only works with iPhone 7 upwards and i was wondering as I'm still in the cooling off period can I upgrade the contract to an iPhone 7 rather than cancelling the contract.
