I have just upgraded to sim only contact. Keeping my old handset and number. All details have been updated in my account. I have received a new sim in the post. Do I need to use it if I'm not changing number or handset

You don’t need the new SIM is the bottom line answer.
Howeever we do recommend activating it to save any problems.
These are automatically sent when upgrading incase you switched to a new phone or upgrading after not using for so long etc.
It’s very easily possible to accidentally activate this in the app/account via a pop-up and lead to all services swapping over.
Worse if you are out and about and even worse if out of the country.
This is why we advise activating it beforehand and then you can just swap over and use it with no worries.
