I upgraded onlineĀ but instead of an upgrade I have been given a new contract and a new credit search has been done. Can it be changed to an upgrade as I cannot pay for two contracts?

I am sorry to hear about that, it seems as though you bought a new contract instead of an upgrade. You would need to return the new purchase (info here) and upgrade your old plan if you donāt want to lose your number.
