Using my phone abroad

Whilst in Northern Ireland and southern Ireland I could not make or receive any calls. I could see incoming calls but when I answered the line was dead with no sound at all and the receiver could not hear me. 

Roaming was switched on both on the app and handset. I could however receive and send text messages with no issues.  Since coming home I have searched the Hubs for answers, checked the APN which was set up correctly so I'm a bit stuck. 

I'm going to Italy in a few weeks and would like to try and resolve this before I go away again.

Please ensure roaming is enabled on the app and your handset.

Whilst in Italy, please connect the Wind network or 3 ITA.

Thanks for your reply. As stated in my question I confirmed that Roaming was enabled on both app and handset. I also checked the APN and it was as explained in the Guide to set up your phone abroad. 

As stated previously, I could send and receive text msg but not calls!
