What's the best phone for taking photos?

Thing is, you can't go wrong with any phone camera these days, as most of them have performance capabilities way beyond their human handlers. So choose a phone, any phone, then learn a bit about photography. There's much to assimilate, from composition, exposure, landscapes, lighting, close-ups and portraiture. But most of all (are you listening?) be brave in your editing. The best photographers are almost invariably the best editors. Learn the power of picture cropping, colour balancing, and without doubt, deleting. Can you imagine the mess the Sunday Times would be if it didn't have a good editor? Take lots of pictures, no harm in that. Compliment your subjects and keep shooting. Then, in the quiet, delete any that you wouldn't have shown at the National Gallery with your name attached.

Most phone photos are taken from to far away so don't be afraid to get closer, whatever the subject. And don't forget your most powerful editing tool: the delete button. Take lots of alternatives and keep the very best, using the crop tool to tighten the composition.

Bag yourself a bargain this Black FridayBlog

For me it has to be the original Samsung Galaxy Note. It had a 'huge' screen that at 5.3'' had all the reviewers laughing and pointing and asking if you'd be seen dead with that monstrosity at your ear. Well yes, we early adopters knew what we wanted. If the phone was going to be an out and about computer, then it needed an accurate pin-point stylus, which is exactly what it got. Brave Samsung; you richly deserve your following and commercial success.  Tom

The Evolution of Tech: Then and Now

My Canon 1014E Super 8 movie camera from 1973. It's so mechanical, so noisy and so beautiful, and it still works perfectly to this day. It doesn't record sound and it's mighty expensive to run, but it's a fascinating example of what photography was at 50 years ago. Tom.
