When do I need a new SIM?

I upgraded my sim only package to a higher tier/data allowance a few days ago,  this is showing in my home area with the new data allowance, but now I’m getting text messages saying a new sim is in the post to me and will need to activate it?. Why would a new sim be being sent from just upgrading my data allowance? a process I have done twice before all with the same sim/number.

*edit: I wasn’t paying attention and it now appears the text I received at 4:15pm today is a phising attempt. Somehow they know I was with iD, however it’s from a random number with a phishing ‘bit.ly’ link, where as all my other messages are from the contact ‘iD’has there been a security breach today?

would this also have to do with the weird email I got this morning telling me my contract ran out in october 2015, and the text I got saying this month’s billing failed?are your systems just playing up?
