Upgrading my existing plan, and it's asking me for payment details?

I’ve got a sim only rolling month plan, when I log into my account it shows an option to update to a different plan. 

When I click on that and select a new plan, it’s making me go through checkout and add my card details, and they will charge it £0.01, why? Can’t they just change my plan and continue to charge my existing direct debit instead of creating some new 2nd payment?

Also, when will this new plan take effect? It feels like I’m going to sign up to a new plan halfway through the month so I’m being charged for this new plan whilst still be charged my old one also?
