My phone has completely broken so think my only option is to buy out of contract early and then take out new contract. Is this the only option?

Why not get yourself a cheap pre-owned unlocked phone to use until you’re eligible for an upgrade?
That will avoid some issues like:
- Early termination charges
- Keeping your mobile number (assuming you want to keep it)
