‘sim not inserted’ message on a brand new sim and phone

We have a brand new phone and sim, however the message ‘no sim inserted’ comes up. It says that a new sim should automatically work but it does not. I believe the sim is faulty and a replacement needed. 
 

we have also tried the sim in another compatible phone and it doesn’t work in that phone either.

It does sound like you need a replacement SIM card.
