I need to unlock my phone for use with another network/SIM card which has already been installed. Is this possible or do I have to put the old card back in?

Its probably worth adding that I think the subscription on it ended a few days ago as I switched bank and couldn't get in touch with anyone at ID mobile to give them my new bank account for the direct debit. I didn't have any online access at the time and had to go with a network that I could reach by phone and set up a new account/SIM.
