I’ve just upgraded my sim only plan and I’ve received a new sim. Do I need to use the new sim and activate it? or I can just carry on using my current sim?

Do you currently have both SIM’s in your possession? Could you check that only one of those SIM’s is actually active and working (as you should never have 2 active SIM’s if you have done an upgrade).
If it is that only the old SIM is active currently, then you would have the choice to either continue using that one -or- you could pop the new SIM in the phone then log in to your iD Mobile account and activate that SIM using the iD Mobile App.
If both SIM’s are active as things stand, then please let us know. If that’s not what you wanted then we’ll need to contact you privately to cancel the new SIM as it would then suggest you’ve simply bought a new second-line instead of upgrading your existing one.
