I've moved abroad but still need a uk number for occasional use. Can I turn my contact into  pay as you go?

Unfortunately it wouldn’t be possible to move a contracted plan to a Pay As You Go for usage, or visa versa, sorry.

I am in similar position, out of the UK for 3 months and can't use ID contract during that time. Wanting to switch to the cheapest contract so I can still keep my number - which is the cheapest contract? I can only see £6 per month

I’d recommend checking your iD Mobile app/website for the cheapest contract to upgrade/change to, this may be around £6.
