iOS 14 & Android 11 at a glance (Includes a competition)

Looking for a new smartphone? Whichever brand or device you choose, the chances are that it’ll all come down to a single question – iPhone or Android? Here, we’ll explain what both can do to help you make the choice. And if you fancy sprucing up that new handset with some fantastic games and apps, read on to find out how to get your hands on a £50 app store gift card!

Let’s start with the basics. iOS and Android are the operating systems that most smartphones use. All iPhones use iOS and the majority of other brands run on Android. Both have been around for quite a while now and have been refined again and again over the past decade, making them better, smoother and more intuitive with age. However, there are a few things you should know when making your mind up.

iOS (iPhone, iPad)

If you’ve already got a Mac or iPad, you’re probably familiar with Apple’s operating system. While every Apple phone, tablet and computer works brilliantly on its own, once you have one, iOS means that new Apple devices fit into your ecosystem right away. With that, you can carry data between your iPhone and Mac, copy text on one device and paste it on another, or even scan photos using your iPhone camera and edit them on your laptop. It really is seamless.

When we say the operating system looks and feels clean, we mean it. When you unlock the home screen for the first time, you won’t find any niche, pre-installed apps (or ‘bloatware’) that you can’t remove. This is often the case with some Android phones, especially since Android is so customisable (but more on that later). So, you only start with the absolute essentials, and you can always download the apps you need to make it your own. Apps can be found in the App Store, and there are nearly 2 million to choose from.

Speaking of downloads, you’ll always get regular software and security updates to keep your iPhone ticking over, the moment they’re available. And it couldn’t be easier. Just go to Settings > General > Software Update, then tap Download and Install. Simple as that. With regular updates, your iPhone stays current and feels fresh well into the future.

Already an iPhone user? Go to your settings to get the latest iOS 14 now! It’s got a bunch of great new features, including custom icons that make your home screen pop, and widgets that give you weather and news updates, show the song you’re playing and more.

You’ll also be able to find your apps in an instant. Pin your most used apps to the home screen and scroll through the rest of them alphabetically, or group them into categories like ‘social media’ and ‘finance’. Perfect.

Android (Samsung, Google Pixel, Huawei, Honor, Motorola, Sony, OPPO and more)

The Android system is used across a massive range of smartphones and tablets, from entry level handsets to flagship phones that do it all. So, it’s easy to find an Android device to suit your budget.

Different Android phone manufacturers have their own interface, or ‘skin’, that runs with Android as its base. There’s Samsung’s One UI, OPPO Color OS, and Google’s ‘stock’ Android offering, among many others. While these are each unique in their own way, the main navigation and feel remain very similar.

We mentioned that Android is popular because of its customisation options. If you want a system that you can really personalise, this is it. You can put apps wherever you like on the home screen, group them into categories, add widgets and loads more. If you prefer a single home screen with only the essentials, you can do just that and access the rest of them from the app drawer.

Don’t have an app drawer? No problem, just download one from the Google Play Store! Every Android device has access to the Google Play Store and its library of over 2 million apps. And the beauty of Android is, even if you don’t like the apps that come with your phone, they can be changed.  Take your default browser, for example. If it feels tricky to use or you’re struggling with button locations, just choose another from the Play Store and set it as your new default, like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. You’ll feel right at home.

Android gets better over time, too. Most new Android phones come with two years of regular security updates, and it’s easy to download the latest version of the operating system. Go to Settings > System > Advanced > System update. There, you’ll see if there’s a new update and you can follow the steps to get it.

The latest version of Android, Android 11, is starting to roll out now and it’s bringing some exciting new updates to the system. You can open and minimise messages from friends and family in chat bubbles and move them across the screen out of the way. You can change the phone’s theme to Dark Mode and put it on a timer so you’re not straining your eyes when you browse at night. And you can even control your smart lighting, heating and speakers from the notification drop-down menu. Wow.

As for phone security, Android has you covered. Whichever manufacturer you choose, you’ll find handsets with fingerprint scanners, facial recognition and passcodes to give you secure access. And in the Google Play Store, you can find anti-virus apps and clean-up software that remove unnecessary, clunky files from your storage and scan apps for harmful files. That way you can browse for new apps with peace of mind.

Android because they are not as expensive

Apple all the way easy to use and nice to look at

Definitely Android. It is a lot cheaper than Apple and just as good and easy to use than Apple. Service from Apple is awful. They have no complaints department and can only ever talk to their support who can’t deal when you have a real problem. Would never buy apple again.

With Android you get more choice on phone models. iphones are way too expensive, and the pixels are much better value.

Prefer iPhone. Nothing can compare to the smooth experience and that feeling that you are holding something special in your hand, not the average smartphone.

I’ve had quite a few android phones and currently an iPhone. I changed to an iPhone, even in general they are more expensive, as I wanted a phone that did what was required reliably and consistently. In addition, the seamless linking to my iPad, iPod, and MacBook is a huge plus.

Simple android is far superior to iOS, I have family with apple devices and after each update they need another one to fix the mistakes. I've never had that with android. Also iPhones are over priced vs Samsung

Always used to be Android with a bit of a snotty attitude to Apple and its quest to take over the world...until I got an Iphone.

Userlevel 1

I exclusively prefer android.

I've tried iOS devices and find their technology restrictive, with a nanny-state attitude towards users. Android on the other hand can be tinkered with, explored, tweaked and improved by an interested user.

There are so many more useful apps not available on iOS too. Too many times I've told apple user friends about something available I'd found - "not available on iOS", or it's a washed-out, depreciated version that's as good as useless after the developer has been forced to water the app down by apple.

Yes - android all the way.

I definitely prefer Android as there are many more choices of apps to choose from. There are more users on Android so sharing and connecting are made easy. Not to mention that cost are generally ‘half of the price’ on Android phone compare to Apple.:thumbsup_tone4:

IOS for me. I guess it’s just what you get used to but I find that the iPhones and iPads we have in our house just work, it is straightforward to share contacts etc and I don’t need worry about “managing” the devices. I’m not sure about Android but one frustration with IOS is that the devices continue to function perfectly after Apple stop providing IOS updates.

Userlevel 2

I prefer Android, just because I’m used to it.

Userlevel 1

I’ve swapped between the two over the years, but prefer android. I’m more of a power user so prefer the greater control and integration that the android platform provides, and I dont want to be locked into the apple ecosystem :P

I prefer Apple as I love the fact that I can link with my children on their Apple devices & we can all see when each other have read messages & share photos ect. & I love that I can take a photo on my mobile & it appears on my iPad too & vice versa.

Userlevel 1

Android for me. All the functionality I need usually at more affordable prices and not just tied into one manufacturer.

Userlevel 1

Always Android. Apple is too locked in yo one product

Userlevel 1

I prefer iOS. I have an iMac for my academic research which includes a lot of photographs. I got fed up with my previous windows phone not connecting successfully to iOS after an upgrade. Once I switched to iPhone, I never wanted to go back!

Userlevel 1

I have always been an Android user so simply Android is my go to choice of device's whether that be mobile, tablet etc.

I have never had the privilege of owning a apple/ios device. I have heard so many great things but I've never even though about getting one as it has been and always will be Android that I go to

I love android, fast and reliable u love it,

Tyron Anderson

Actually it's a tricky questions as I got both Android and iOS phone. They are both good in use or depending on user requirements. Android phone are open, you can play with it add your marks but iOS phone it's closed so use what is given to you. Both got advantage and disadvantage. In honest comments both are best in their fields. Oh I forgot to say I got a Windows phone. But I can say both Android & iOS phone are better than Windows phone. My phones are Xaomi Note 4, iPhone 7 plus and Microsoft Lumia 650

Yeah my brother has a redmi 4a and we have an iPhone 7 was a pain switching from android to ios

Android but without all the bloatware.   Just a stock Google device without Bixby, huwai or any other unnecessary app.   Almost sounds like I prefer iOS😁

Userlevel 1

I use android as I cannot justify the cost of an iPhone. You get used to it but would prefer to use IOS.

I have always been an Apple product lover! I swear by IOS and wouldn’t use any other products. Family member have used android but I’ve always struggled to get on with it

I prefer iphone as That is what I have become used to.  There area few things I don’t like e.g.if I want to attach a photo to an email I always forget Apple needs me to select and send the photo first.  Otherwise using the iphone has become almost intuitive.
