Most of us use our smartphones every single day, but it’s probably fair to say we don’t always get the most out of them. Or actually realise how to. There’s a ton of clever features tucked away just out of sight on iPhone and Android that you might not know about. From fun ones to the more practical, here are a few of our favourites that you’re definitely going to want to try out…

Document scanner

Got an important doc you need to scan and send for work? No worries. If you’ve got an iPhone, fire up your Notes app. Create a new note, and then tap the camera icon at the bottom of your screen. Hit ‘Scan Documents’ and position your camera over the document. It’ll then automatically snap it for you. But if you want some more control, hit ‘Auto’ in the top right corner. It’ll switch to ‘Manual’ mode, letting you scan it in the same way you’d take a photo. Then just crop the corners of your doc, and when you’re happy with it, hit save. Sorted.

It's a bit different on Android. Open your camera app and place it over the document. If it’s all in shot, a yellow border will pop up around it. Press the ‘Tap to Scan’ button and then drag your corners to set the scan area. When it’s looking good, press save to store it. Who needs a printer with a scanner, eh?

Magnifying glass

Don’t just sit there squinting at some tiny text (or your colleagues’ scruffy handwriting). On iPhone, swipe right past your home screens until your App Library pops up. Find the ‘Utilities’ folder, open it up, and you’ll spot the Magnifier app. Use it to zoom right in on those hard-to-read words. You can even tweak the contrast and brightness to make things way clearer.

For Android, you’ll need to open your camera app. Instead of pinching your fingers together on the screen, move them apart. This’ll help to magnify whatever you’re looking at. And save you an annoying headache in the long run.

Pedometer

This might give you the nudge you need to get up and going. In the Health app on your iPhone, there’s a pedometer which automatically counts your steps. It’ll compare your data week on week too. So, if you’ve been a real couch potato, it’ll quickly let you know. Click ‘Edit’ on your favourites section and you can track a bunch of other stats as well. Whether that’s distance covered or your walking speed. You’ll be able to really dig into all the important fitness nitty gritty to see how you’re getting on.

Google phones have their own app too (imaginatively called Google Fit). Just hit the ‘Steps’ button and it’ll record how much you’ve walked. And Samsung’s own Health app does the same job as well. So, there’s an option there for whatever kind of phone you’ve got.

Emoji and text shortcuts

If you want to save even more time while you text, check out text replacement shortcuts. On iPhone, head to your settings and click ‘Keyboard’ then ‘Text Replacement’. Hit the plus symbol in the top right corner and two boxes will appear. In the box ‘Shortcut’ you can put either an emoji or an acronym, and then the longer version of it in the ‘Phrase’ box above. This way, when you hit your chosen emoji, or write the short version of something like ‘omw’, the full ‘on my way’ will show up instead. Smart.

Search photos by category

Those 40 selfies. Multiple pics of your nan’s cute dog. Too many memes to count. Most of us have a camera roll that’s stuffed full of snaps. But on Android and iPhone, you can quickly find that photo you need. Go to your pictures and tap the ‘Search’ icon. Then type in any word you like. It should then pull up any relevant images - saving you a bunch of time in the process.

My favourite is

Hold down on the lock screen and it allows you to customize your lock screen and also shuffle your photos. You can also set a time for the pictures. Such a great feature

"SCREENSHOOT" Swiping my right hand (little finger against the screen - like a one handed prayer 🙏) placed on the left side of screen, then swipe to the right...

I like the slow motion record option on my Google Pixel 6. I caught a great lightning strike with it last year.

Google lens is great, if I don't know what something is, I take a picture of it and Google lens will search the internet looking for similar images.

My favourite feature on my Iphone is to message people from my address book while driving,

with Siri. You can do this anytime but it’s particularly useful when driving.

A short message like ‘I’m on my way’  or ‘I’ll be there in 10 mins’ can be done ‘hands free’.

I just say “Hi Siri, text ***** I’m on my way” Siri replies “send it?” I reply “yes” Siri says “it’s done”.

My favourite trick on an iPhone to capture a still picture of something that’s happening fast eg lightening strikes, fire works etc is to record a video to capture it. Then playback with finger frame by frame to get to the perfect photo to screen capture!

My fav feature is the single hand mode on my google pixel 7

Use a photo app to create hoot receipts for

your expenses. Images come out really clearly and they get resized automatically and can be emailed directly to you

Pedometer is really helpful in monitoring my daily physical activities, thus pushing me to a healthier lifestyle.

I have Drawers of wonderful old photos of daily life in the early 1900’s at home.

My relatives are excited to receive relevant labelled copies via WhatsApp. Easy for me to share.

Their family trees are illuminated with fantastic family likenesses .

Quick and easy!

My favourite feature is Google Assistant. A great help for the lazy.

I find holding down the space bar to move my typing cursor to where I need it in the text a lot easier than trying to do it with my finger. Also swipe right hand corner on my iPhone to get the torch app.

Best feature is the operating system!

My favourite is the voice commands to take photos. It automatically takes a photo when you say "cheese!" Perfect for when you aren't able to press the capture button.

Using the microphone icon on the keyboard to speak the text you want to type. Great for the "older" user like myself who can't type as fast as the younger generation.

Scanning a document to create a pdf was a lifesaver when I visited my daughter at university and she needed to convert a document to a pdf but the library was unavailable that day.  Simple but effective

A very handy feature that not many people know about is WiFi calling in built up areas or remote areas which have little or no signal, turn on this options in your call settings and connect to any WiFi router.

My favourite hidden feature is Google lens, being able to scan an image or object and search Google to find out what it is, it's a neat trick! Wanna know what that random plant is and how to care for it? Google lens it!

Definitely the scanner for me!  Like you say, so many people don’t know about it and are amazed when you explain how easily they can scan documents wherever they are…

I use it all the time 👍

I love the trick of holding your finger on an app which then opens up a little menu of options or quick action settings instead of opening up an app and multiple taps/clicks to get to a certain part of an app.

I like Google lens the most for finding the name of buildings, art etc.

Bixby Vision.

Has to be the biggest game changer ever,

Use it wherever in the world you are, comes in handy for translating everything you point it at, awesome for shopping when you see something you really like while out and about, it will tell you what it is and where you can buy it.

Go on give it a try.

When using the degree sign, as in °C, I hold down the 0 and the degree sign comes up. I also found out that by holding down the other punctuations, you get other characters to come up.
