numbers which require extra charges

I tried to contact 150 and some 0800 numbers and was told I needed to pay extra - why? and how?

0800 & 0808 numbers are free from mobiles and landlines in the U.K. Not sure about 150. Isn’t that number for calling BT/EE or Sky customer services. Not sure if it would work calling from an iD line.
