4G calling on Oneplus 5

A while ago, I stopped being able to receive or make phone calls. Today I decided to do something about it, and after some research I learnt it's probably due to the 3g network being switched off. I also learnt that my phone, OnePlus 5, is not on the list of supported phones for 4g calling, and the guide for turning on 4g calling is not applicable to me (those options aren't available, not even under different names as far as I can tell).

Is there any hope for me or will I need to switch carrier (I am not getting a new phone yet)?

As a side note, the chat bot was about as helpful as a sack of potatoes in this case, and I think it might be easier to find Atlantis than a proper contact method to speak to a human. Please, I don't want to talk to a bot.

Hi @DanielDamo

To enable VoLTE (4G) on a OnePlus 5, navigate to Settings > SIM & network and toggle on the VoLTE switch under Enhanced Communications. Alternatively, you can access the same setting by dialing ##4636## and then selecting Phone Information and toggling VoLTE provisioned. If the VoLTE option is missing, your network provider may not support it on the OnePlus 5, or you may need to update your device's software.

Have you looked at SMARTY?

As far as their ‘not supported’ 4G Oneplus devices they have only listed:-

  • OnePlus Three

  • Three T

They also, like iD Mobile, piggyback the THREE network and have comparable packages (with some positives and negatives e.g they don’t charge for MMS mesages like iD Mobile do) so you need to do your homework as to whether it ticks all the boxes.

To ensure that your phone is ok to use with their network it is worth using their on-line chat to discuss this:-

Try typing ‘talk to a person’ in the conversation box to stop the round and round inane questions of the chatbot. Please set aside time to do this as advisors handle several chats at a time and so it may take a while to start a chat and then to get replies.

Or you can email them for advice at :-

Hope this helps x

Try telling the 24/7 iD chatbot that you’d like to “talk to a person”, @DanielDamo

Good idea, but literally as soon as the customer service representative joined, they immediately ended the chat. Ah well it was worth a try @andewhite

Hi @DanielDamo

If the iD Mobile SIM card is being used inside an unsupported device unfortunately we can only suggest to use the SIM inside a device that is supported, sorry.

Thank you @Decembersangel72, I'll definitely look into smarty! I've been meaning to swap to one that either supports my phone or at least still has 2G up for calls (as far as I'm aware, three doesn't have a 2G network), but I like the sound of not being charged for MMSs.

Unfortunately I can't toggle volte at all so sounds like I will be jumping ship.

You are very welcome @DanielDamo

If you are thinking of moving to a 2G network then EE and Vodafone's 2G networks are still operational, according to Ofcom. While O2 plans to start moving traffic away from its 2G network in 2025, it hasn't been fully switched off yet.
Although, moving to either EE or Vodafone will mean paying top £ for one of their packages.

Hopefully, once you connect to a network that supports your device the VoLTE selection should work as I am assuming that the option to turn it on is available but just greyed out?

Oh and just to let you know that with SMARTY you can not use shortcode messaging as they do not support it. So if you have any services that use these codes to contact you e.g. bank, doctors etc, or you use them to enter competitions, or the like, then this option will not be available for use.

Good luck x

Hi @DanielDamo

I’ve just been on the SMARTY Community page and have seen that they DO support shortcodes now! It has been a long time coming with them but they got there in the end and so the service they offer is now comparable to iD Mobile.

Here is the information with regards to this if you are still interested in joining SMARTY:-
