The number you want to keep will transfer to iD Mobile even if you’re abroad,
Your iD SIM might not recognise the transfer happened though, if you’re not using the iD Mobile home network, i.e. not in the UK.

Your number will still port over to our network as usual on the date you’ve chosen, but it may not work abroad, as you need to be in the UK for the SIM to begin working correctly.
We’d usually advice to complete a port when in the UK to avoid any problems.
