My phone plays media etc no problem, but microphone doesn't pick up sounds. This makes Gemini no use, or the recorder function. This is a fairly recent problem as it used to work fine.

You could ask Currys to investigate/repair this issue with your Android phone, @Bill Sturgeon.This community article might help.
