Living abroad outside roaming bands 1 and 2 but keeping UK number

I might be moving abroad for a while - possibly a year - to a destination outside iD roaming Band 1 & 2 zones.

I want to keep my UK number and will use an eSIM overseas to get data for comms.

Can I periodically use my phone in this non-roaming location with its UK SIM to ‘keep it active’ - say once a month? Would I risk losing my number at any point? I understand there would be different charges under ‘Fair Use Policy’ but I’m more concerned that I might be disconnected from my UK number which I have had for over 20 years…

I am likely to visit the UK at least once per year, if not more, and also EU destinations in the roaming list (Band 1), so there would be times I’d need the UK number on home soil, so to speak.

Any opinions very gratefully received, thank you.

Joe

Set roaming up before you go on both your account and the phone.

Personally, I’d move your number to one of iD’s cheapest rolling Monthly contracts (not PAYG). They start from as little as £6pm direct from iD.

For the sake of £72 per year it’ll be money well spent just to keep your cherished number!!!

Plus, AFAIK, as it’s a contract it’ll just tick over, even without usage - but maybe consider making one chargeable text/call once in a while so iD can ‘see’ it’s active, or use their free to roam if you’re in band 1 - again so they can see a bit of usage

Hello @Lordshine

Welcome and thank you for posting.

If the plan is Pay as You Go, you will need to ensure you are using the service regularly to ensure it is not deactivated.

If you are using Pay Monthly and continue to keep up with your plan payments, the service should continue as normal as long as the roaming fair usage policy is adhered to.

Should we need to, we will contact you to discuss any changes or concerns that may occur.

Roaming/Charges information can be found here

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Nat
