Android 17 is just around the corner, and it looks like we’re in for a treat. Floating apps, new creator tools and some seriously upgraded security are just some of the new features dropping soon.

Google Pixel owners are first in line, while Samsung and other Android users can expect updates throughout 2026. So if you’ve got an Android device, here's what you need to know.

If you’ve got a Google Pixel 6 or newer, you’re covered. Android 17 supports the Pixel 6 series onwards, including newer Pixel phones, Fold models and the Pixel Tablet. But if you’ve got a Pixel 5a or older, sadly you’ll miss out on this update.

Samsung users will have to wait a little longer. Samsung has started testing One UI 9 (its version of Android 17) on the Galaxy S26 series, but they haven’t confirmed which devices will get the update and when.

Using another Android brand? Release dates will vary by manufacturer, with updates expected throughout 2026.

Rollout timing can also vary by network, so don't panic if someone else gets the update first. Just keep an eye out for update notifications.

Here are the upgrades you're most likely to notice day-to-day:

• Bubbles – Want to reply to a message without leaving Maps? Bubbles turn supported apps into floating windows, making multitasking much easier. On larger screens or foldables, you’ll get a dedicated bubble bar for juggling multiple apps at once.
• Location privacy – Now you only share your location when you need to. Apps such as delivery services only get access to your precise location when they need it, rather than throughout the day.
• Personalisation – You’ll now have more control over how your phone looks and sounds. Hide app names for a tidier home screen, tweak dark mode to suit your style and set a separate volume level for your phone assistant.
• App memory limits – By stopping apps from using too much RAM in the background, your phone could feel smoother and last longer between charges.

The Mark as Lost feature is great for protecting your data if your phone falls into the wrong hands. If your phone goes missing, you can activate this to block anyone from unlocking it using just the passcode. It can also remove your Google Wallet details and block access to personal data and settings.

Now, apps can only access the contacts you choose to share, instead of your whole address book. Android 17 can also make it harder for someone to guess your PIN by increasing the wait time after multiple failed attempts. And if you want extra peace of mind, improved Live Threat Detection and Advanced Protection tools help spot suspicious apps, scams and other potential threats before they become a problem.

If you love making content, Android 17 has some genuinely useful upgrades.

Screen Reactions lets you record your screen and camera at the same time. And new annotation tools make it easier to create guides and social content. This one’s rolling out to Pixel devices first, so Samsung fans will need to hang tight for now.

If you love posting on Instagram, Android 17 can help make your content look more polished with fewer edits. On supported premium devices, Ultra HDR can make photos look more vibrant, and improved stabilisation helps keep videos smooth on the move. Instagram's Edits app is also getting Android-exclusive tools, including one-tap clean-up tools and the ability to separate voices from background noise.

If you game on a foldable phone, a new gaming mode can separate controls from gameplay, giving you a cleaner view of the action. And controller remapping lets you tailor controls to suit your play style.

While Android 17 supports devices going back to the Pixel 6, not every feature will be available on every phone. Some of the biggest upgrades, including Gemini Intelligence tools, advanced creator features and foldable gaming modes, rely on newer hardware.

You don't need a new phone to enjoy Android 17. But if you want the latest AI tools, stronger security and better cameras, a newer device may be worth considering.
