Just treated yourself to a stylish new VR headset? Here’s a list of the best apps and games you’ll want to download.

These days, even budget smartphones are powerful enough to run virtual reality apps. More and more games and apps are being designed with the first-person experience in mind. With so many great VR headsets out there, there’s never been a better time to get started with mobile virtual reality.

Here are some of the best VR apps available for download right now…

1.Chrome Experiments for Virtual Reality (Free)

If you want to check out Google’s experiments in VR, look no further than the Chrome Experiments website. Browse the site from your smartphone – then place it in your VR headset to enjoy the weird and wonderful browser-based apps available.

As this is web-based, you'll find frequent updates and less storage space taken up on your handset, so bookmark the page and dive into the virtual.

2.YouTube VR (Free)

YouTube VR is simply an add-on for your existing YouTube app that’ll let you watch any video in virtual reality. Whether it’s a 360° music video or a trailer for a new PS VR game, YouTube VR drops you right into the middle of the on-screen action.

Check out GoPro’s YouTube channel for some wingsuit action or a downhill mountain biking POV. It’s an adrenaline-junkie’s dream.

Available on Android.

3.VR Thrills: Roller Coaster 360  (Free, with ads and in-app purchases)

No fast-passes necessary for this roller-coaster experience. Roller Coaster 360 combines real-life coasters and 3D-modeled rides that’ll give you theme park thrills on your sofa. As the name suggests, videos are recorded in 360° so you can look around in any direction. It’s just like a real ride, minus the long queue for a front-row seat.

Download on Android.

4.Ping Pong VR (Free (with ads) on Android, £0.99 on iOS)

VR isn’t just about thrilling theme park rides. How about a gentle game of table tennis? In Ping Pong VR, you can build up your skill level in single player and take on your mates in virtual reality too. It’s designed to be played with a full body motion controller but still works great with only a VR headset. You can even customise your bat and add an avatar so your opponent knows exactly who they’re up against.

Available on Android and iOS.

5.Within VR – Cinematic Virtual Reality (Free)

You’ll never want to put the headset down once you’ve downloaded Within VR. It offers a huge range of virtual reality experiences on a single platform, with everything from music videos to short horror movies. It’s not interactive, but don’t let that put you off. There aren’t many apps where you can both swim with sharks and watch Mozart’s Coronation Mass performed in a stunning gothic cathedral.

Download for Android or iOS.
