Spring is finally here! While you are busy clearing out cupboards and shaking off the winter cobwebs, your phone could probably use a little TLC as well. We rely on our phones every single day, but they quietly fill up with unused apps, old downloads, random screenshots, and years of photos we will probably never look at again.

All that digital clutter does not just take up space; it can actually slow everything down. A quick spring clean can boost your phone's speed, free up valuable storage, and even help keep your personal information safer.

But we are not just helping you clean up your digital life today. To help you get your actual home as spotless as your newly organised phone, we are hosting a massive Kärcher Cleaning Giveaway! 🎉

Read on for your easy guide to getting your phone back in shape, and find out exactly how you can win one of these incredible prizes at the bottom of the page.

Digital declutter: the essentials.

Start your clean-up by tackling the apps you absolutely never use. Remember that holiday travel app you downloaded once for a weekend away, or that fitness tracker from three years ago? It is definitely time to let them go. Organising what is left into specific folders makes things so much easier to find.

Next, you need to tackle your camera roll, which is likely the biggest space hog on your phone right now. Take a few minutes to delete duplicates, blurry shots, and old screenshots. Thankfully, in 2026, you can use built-in smart tools like Apple Intelligence or Google Gemini to automatically group your best shots and suggest the blurry duplicates for the bin. It saves you hours of manual scrolling.

Your Downloads folder is also probably overflowing with stray restaurant menus and train tickets you only needed to open once. Have a good dig through this folder, save anything genuinely important somewhere a bit safer, and boldly delete the rest. Finally, group chats, memes, videos, and long voice notes can eat up your storage incredibly fast. Take a moment to delete old, inactive conversations, or simply set an auto-delete function on your messaging apps so they tidy themselves up automatically.

Speed things up.

Cached data builds up quietly over time and can really slow your phone down. If you use an Android phone, simply head into your settings, tap on apps, select storage, and hit clear cache. For iOS users, go to your settings, tap general, open iPhone storage, and use the offload app feature for anything you are not actively using. Do not forget to clear your web browser cache while you are at it.

You also need to look out for battery hogs. Some apps quietly drain your power in the background without you even realising. Check the battery usage section on your phone and uninstall, restrict, or put these power-hungry apps to sleep. Constant notifications, background app refresh, and auto-syncing can also slow your phone down to a crawl. Try turning off notifications from apps you simply do not need constant updates from, and restrict background activity for anything non-essential.

It sounds a bit old-school, but a weekly restart clears out temporary clutter and keeps your phone running smoothly. If all you ever do is pop your phone on charge every night, that constant uptime can lead to serious slowdown over the months.

Secure your phone.

Software updates patch vital security issues and keep your phone running safely. You should absolutely make sure auto-update is switched on for your banking apps, web browsers, social media platforms, and anything else that stores your personal information.

You also need to review your app permissions. Some apps ask for far more access than they actually need to function. Check your settings to see exactly who can use your location, camera, microphone, contacts, and photos, ensuring you only allow these permissions when the app is actively being used.

For your absolute most important accounts, like your email and banking, you need to switch on Two-Factor Authentication using a secure authenticator app. Finally, 2026 is the year to ditch the passwords entirely where possible. Upgrade your logins to Passkeys so you can sign in securely using just your face or fingerprint, completely eliminating the risk of someone guessing a weak or reused password.

Make the most of your time.

A tidy home screen instantly means fewer distractions when you unlock your phone. Try moving everything into your app library, keeping only your absolute essential apps on the very first page. You can also add smart widgets that change dynamically throughout the day to give you the weather, daily reminders, or your fitness goals without you needing to open the apps themselves.

Whether you are working hard, sleeping soundly, or just trying to avoid the trap of doom-scrolling, built-in Focus Modes help control exactly which apps can bug you and when they can do it. Take a look at your Digital Wellbeing stats to see how much time you are actually spending on your phone, and set app timers if you want to break a few bad habits.

Lastly, your phone might be quietly hosting apps you pay for but never use, or free trials you completely forgot to cancel. A quick scan through your active subscriptions can easily save you money every single month.

Use shaving foam to clean mirrors and prevent fogging.

Apply a small amount of shaving foam to a mirror or glass surface, wipe it evenly with a cloth, then buff it off. It leaves the surface streak-free and creates a thin barrier that stops condensation building up when it gets steamy 🤗

When your microwave looks like it’s survived a full-blown armageddon, don’t panic! Just heat a bowl of water with a splash of vinegar or lemon juice until it fills with steam. Let it sit for a couple of minutes, then wipe it down, the loosened grime comes off effortlessly without any scrubbing.

A good way of refreshing your used scouring pads and sink accessories, is to put them in your dishwasher with your normal load, great results, all ready to be used again.

Leaving cleaning for a day a week makes it cumbersome. Do a little in the house everyday.

For my phone, I frequently review the apps. I delete apps that I do not use frequently.
