Hard to pick a favourite but one that always sticks in my memory is the Tongariro Crossing in New Zealand - spectacular, challenging and rewarding. It's almost thirty years since we did it but I won't forget it.

You can’t beat the fresh blasts of north east air whilst walking the coastline from Craster to Dunstanburgh castle.

The walk between Ventnor and Shanklin, Isle of Wight (in either direction and there and back if you have the time and stamina) is my favourite. The walk is on the coastal path and goes through forest landscapes with many twists and turns and has a great many changes of elevation.

It sounds dull, but living in Birmingham city centre, I really enjoy walks along the canals, as within 20mins you can escape the bustle of the city and feel like you are in countryside, or see different areas of the city that you have never explored before.

If I was younger and more mobile, I’d be doing the 5 Peaks Challenge again next year, it’s a wonderful experience that brings back fond memories of my youth, and some friends who are no longer with us. But I still like to get up at least once a year for a more leisurely meander around the more accessible paths.

I like to go for long walks around the Leeds/Wakefield area. I know 17 places - and counting - where you can go under or over the M1! 😅 I might document them all on a fiercely nerdy map!

Can't beat a walk along the banks of the River Clyde. Just try to avoid the midges.

I love walking along the Millennium Greenway across Chester.  It follows the route of an old railway and is always green.  Also it is a good place to pick blackberries in August.

Tongariro Crossing

For anyone fortunate enough to go to New Zealand (and, frankly, everyone should try to visit; one of the most spectacular places in the world) and up for a serious day hike the Tongariro Alpine crossing is a must do.

Climb through increasingly challenging terrain (but very well marked and toilet facilities every few miles) to both incredible views above the clouds, surrounded by steam vents and hot pools (the entire region is a super volcano).

If it looks familiar then that’s because it features heavily in The Lord of the Rings. That mountain over there, yes it is Mount Doom!

The descent is equally rewarding as the terrain changes from desolate, to sparse vegetation until you are in a minor rainforest.

Astonishing

Malvern hills always offers so many varied routes. From British camp to seeing deer in the ferns there’s always a new surprise with the views going over the black hills and beyond. Amazing.

My wife (also an ID Mobile user) and I love the South West Coast Path.  We are slowly working our way around the 600+ miles of it - but in bite-size chunks!! :)   We try to achieve about 10-miles each time, often staying in B&Bs overnight.  It’s great to see the fantastic scenery and to come across beaches and coves that are hidden away from the normal touristy routes.  With the vagaries of the British weather we carry back-packs with foul-weather gear and changes of clothes.  We don’t do too badly for a couple in their 70s!!

I love local walks with spectacular sea views, especially great is the walk from Ilfracombe harbour, up to Hillsborough and down into Hele bay. For the more adventurous you can continue walking towards Watermouth Castle. Lovely views along the costal path, navigating is made easier using a Garmin device.

My favourite walk is around the famous Carp fishing lake (to anglers at least) called Redmire Pool just down the road from where I live in Herefordshire.

I consider myself very lucky because it is privately owned and exclusive and expensive to actually fish there, and is not generally available for anyone to just stroll around.

Well worth "Googling" the history if you have any interest in fishing.
