erratic internet connection how to pinoint cause

My 4g router internet connection is often very erratic. Today for example it went down 30 times for durations from 5 seconds to 30 minutes. How to pinpoint the cause? Nb my mobiles also has an idmobile sim - when I tried swapping sims it seemed to make no difference.

    Unfortunately we cannot support our SIMS being used in routers. 

    If the SIM also does not work for data in a mobile device, it would be worth requesting a replacement.
