Thank you for getting in touch with us. If you’re travelling to Switzerland and want to use your phone for calls, texts and data while you’re there, there are a few things to be aware of:

Switzerland is not part of the EU roaming zone, so roaming charges may apply depending on your plan. To help keep costs low while you’re abroad, here are some options:

Purchase a roaming add-on / bolt-on before you travel — these typically offer a set amount of data, minutes and texts for use abroad at a fixed cost.

Use Wi-Fi where possible for data and calls using apps like WhatsApp/FaceTime/Skype.

Check in-plan roaming allowances — if your plan includes any roaming benefits, these might reduce charges.

Adjust the cap to an amount that suits you (example: £20 or £30)

I am not clear about data / calls. Is searching the internet under data? What about WhatsApp - does that count as data or calls? I take it that you can still receive calls after your service is up?

I have just come back from Switzerland and had not taken any action before leaving. Very quickly I received the text saying I was 80% towards my cap and 100% shortly after. It appeared at that time that I could not go on to the app or the internet to change my bill cap - is wi fi the only way if you have run out?

I see that there is a way to cover this before leaving using the Roam Beyond add ons, but it says ‘get extra data with add ons’ which last for a certain number of days. What are the add ons or is it just data?

I will need to make a calculation as to how much to purchase before my next trip. Any help welcome. Thanks

Kindly note that roaming in Switzerland is not included in our roaming package, so there is no option for making calls free of charge, however you can purchase a data roaming bundle, as mentioned on our website under ‘Roaming Charges’ (https://www.idmobile.co.uk/help-and-advice/international-and-roaming-charges)
