So it my upgrade day today but why is it cheaper to take a new contract out then upgrade

This is currently how iD Mobile, and most other networks, operate as it's easier to draw in new customers with a good deal. Most customers, that want to stay with the same network, usually just accept what they are offered when their contracts end and so the incentive to keep them is minimal.

The other option, once your current contract has ended, is to port your current number over to a different network on a pay as you go sim and then once ported reorder the package on iD Mobile and port your number back to iD Mobile. 

Triangular porting, or a triangle port, is a process for transferring a mobile number from one provider to another when a direct transfer isn't possible, such as when moving between two plans with the same provider to secure a "new customer" deal. It involves porting your number to a temporary Pay As You Go (PAYG) SIM on a different network and then porting it back to your desired network and plan.
