charges for abroad usages (had data turned off)

I’ve been charged for using mobile data in India when I had my uk data turned off. I know this because I’d purchased secondary abroad mobile data, I’ve had my monthly bill nearly tripled for this. I’m not sure how to go about getting a refund because it’s an unnecessary amount of extra money. Any feedback would be great. Thanks
