Got charged for "rest of the world roaming" when my Sim was deactivated

I was recently in Tunisia. As soon as my plane touched down, I got a message from Id saying I wod be charged for using their services while in Tunisia. At which point I deactivated my tim, turned off roaming etc. Now I have had a charge of almost £17 for "rest of the world roaming". How can that be the case when my sim was inactive the whole time I was away, and was only reactivated when I returned to the UK?

Hi @MichaelMcG,

We're sorry to hear about the unexpected roaming charges.

From what you've described, it's likely that your phone connected to the local network as soon as the plane landed. During the time between your device connecting to the network and you turning off roaming or disabling your SIM, chargeable usage may have occurred automatically in the background (such as data used by apps or your device).

In Tunisia, our standard roaming rates are:

  • Calls to the UK: £6.00 per minute
  • Calls to Tunisia: £6.00 per minute
  • Calls received: £1.50 per minute
  • Texts to the UK or Tunisia: £1.20 per message
  • Picture messages: £0.60 per message
  • Data: £9.60 per MB

You can view the full roaming rates here: https://www.idmobile.co.uk/help-and-support/roaming

To help prevent this from happening in the future, we'd recommend setting your bill cap to £0.00 before travelling outside of our inclusive roaming destinations. This will stop chargeable usage from being applied to your account.

Regards,

That would all be very well if I had actually used any data, sent any texts, or made any calls. I didn't do any of that. All I received was one text from id to say Tunisia was not included in the free roaming countries. At which point I deactivated my sim card. My phone shows I used no data at all whilst in Tunisia. This is just a case of ripping your customers off. Shame on you .

Also, I have just checked my account on the app. There is nowhere on the app that even mentions a “cap”, nevermind an option to change one. So this has obviously been set to a high figure by id and has been made impossible for me to change. If this is the case, it is unlawful .
