Question

Roaming charges

I have recently discovered border bleeding where your phone joins a network from a country ID mobile doesn’t have a roaming agreement whilst you are in a country that does. Whilst a message was sent from the other country, I was driving and failed to pick up the change until I got a message saying I’d used 80% of my allocation which confused me. I turned my roaming off but found I’d been charged £45.

I questioned this with the chat option on the app and was offered a measly £10 refund as a goodwill gesture. However, the person on the chat said they recommend setting your excess to £0. I did find reference to this eventually on the app.

My question is this: why doesn’t ID mobile set the excess as £0 as a default amount so that people don’t get caught out by this.

    Hi @Michael44,

I’m sorry to hear about the unexpected £45 charge, and I completely understand your concerns regarding how easily this can happen when travelling close to a country border.

Unfortunately, there isn’t an automatic setting that changes your Bill Cap to £0 when you travel abroad. The Bill Cap is set at a chosen amount when the plan is taken out and can then be adjusted by the account holder.

We do send warning messages when chargeable usage reaches certain levels, but as you experienced while driving, we appreciate that these notifications may not always be seen immediately.

For this reason, we strongly recommend setting your Bill Cap to £0 before travelling if you don’t want to incur any unexpected out-of-plan or roaming charges. This is particularly important when travelling near international borders, where a handset may connect to a neighbouring country’s network.

You can find further information about managing your Bill Cap here:

We’re sorry again for the unexpected charges and appreciate you raising your concerns regarding the default Bill Cap.

    Regards,
