I sent a normal text message on Christmas Day to all my friends (50+). For some reason this was sent as a mms and therefore I was charged £28!!!

why was this sent as an mms rather than sms

Hi @Pitters ,

I understand why this would be really concerning, especially when you weren’t expecting any extra charges.

When a text is sent to a large group of contacts (such as 50+ people), some phones automatically convert the message from SMS to MMS. This usually happens because:

-Group messages are treated as multimedia/group conversations rather than individual texts

-The phone’s messaging settings have “Group Messaging” or “Send as MMS” enabled

-The network can’t deliver the message as a single bulk SMS, so it defaults to MMS

An MMS is chargeable, whereas standard SMS messages are typically included in your allowance. That’s why the £28 charge appeared.

To help prevent this happening again, you can:

-Send messages to smaller groups or individually

-Turn off “Group Messaging” or “Send as MMS” in your phone’s message settings

-Use apps like WhatsApp for large group messages, as these don’t incur SMS/MMS charges
