Bored of the chat on a WhatsApp group? Annoyed by needless notifications? Then leave the group! Even better, remove it from your phone. You’ll feel so much better, trust us. Here’s how to get it done.

WhatsApp groups are great for planning events and nights out, especially when you’ve got a lot of people to organise. But when your night out was weeks ago, all those notifications can get a little irritating.

The exact method for leaving a WhatsApp group (and deleting it from your phone) depends on whether you’ve got admin rights for the group, or if you’re just a normal member. First of all, let’s show you luck admin users what to do…

How to delete a WhatsApp group when you’ve got admin rights

If you’re an Admin user and you’re not interested in your WhatsApp group any more, you can either 1) delete it, or 2) just leave it and assign admin rights to someone else.

1. Permanently deleting a WhatsApp group
Right then. If you’re the admin on your WhatsApp group, here are the simple steps you need to follow to permanently delete it.

1. Open WhatsApp and tap on the group chat you want to delete.
2. Tap the three dots at the top to open the menu, then choose Group info.
3. You’ll now see a list of group members, and you’ll need to remove each one before you can delete the group. Press and hold on each person’s details, then tap Remove.
4. Once you’ve removed each group member, tap Exit Group and confirm by tapping Exit.
5. Now, you’ll see an empty group, just tap Delete Group and confirm by tapping Delete.

2. Assign admin control to someone else in your WhatsApp group
If you just want to leave the group rather than deleting it, go ahead and assign admin control to someone else before you leave. It’s probably a good idea to let the person know before you do this. If they’re finding the group notifications just as annoying as you are, they might not thank you!
So, as long as you’ve found someone who’s happy to manage the group, here’s how to switch admin:

1. Open WhatsApp and press and hold the Group you no longer want to manage.
2. Tap Group info.
3. Press and hold the name of the person you’d like to become Admin.
4. Choose Make group admin.
5. Now, you’ll need to remove yourself. So from the list of members, tap and hold your name, then choose Remove me.

Now that you’ve switched admin control to someone else, you can follow the next step if you want to leave the group and delete it from your phone.

How to leave a WhatsApp group and delete it from your phone
