So, you’ve got a new Samsung phone. Lucky thing! You’ll want to switch over all your important stuff from your old phone now, right? It’s not difficult, but it does take a little planning. Let us show you how.

The most important thing you’ll need to do before you switch your phones is to back up your data. And we recommend using a Wi-Fi connection when backing up your phone because it can use a lot of data.

Here’s how to back up all your data, from an iPhone, or an Android.

Backing up your iPhone to Google

The easiest way to transfer from an iPhone to your new Samsung phone, is to back up your iPhone to a Google account. Here’s how to do it:

1. Download the Google Drive app from iTunes.

2. Open Google Drive (you might need to sign in to your Google account if you haven’t already added it to your iPhone).

3. Tap the menu icon in the top left (three lines).

4. Tap Settings > Backup, then Start backup.

It might take some time to back everything up, so be patient. It all depends on how much data is stored on your phone, and how fast your internet connection is.

When everything’s backed up, you can sign into your Google account from any connected device, to check that the backup was successful. If you want to check that your photos are all backed up, you’ll be able to view them at www.photos.google.com.

Backing up your Android phone

If you use an Android phone, chances are you’ve added your Google account and it’s already backing up your data automatically. Without a Google account, you wouldn’t be able to download apps from the Play Store. Here’s how to make sure everything’s safely backed up.

1. Check that everything is syncing to Google
The first thing to check is that everything is set to sync with Google automatically.
To check your sync settings, go to Settings > Accounts > Google (your email) > Account sync.

From here, you’ll be able to see which apps back up your data automatically to your Google account. Make sure everything you want to keep is switched on.

2. Back up your apps and settings using Google
Now make sure your apps and settings are all backed up. This makes things much easier when you’re replacing your phone, because you don’t need to spend ages adding your settings and trying to remember which apps you had.

1. Go to Settings > System > Backup to turn the service on.

2. If it isn’t already switched on, tap Account and choose your Google account. Then make sure the ‘Back up to Google Drive switch is on.

3. Tapping Back up now will immediately back up all of your apps and settings data.

3. Back up your photos to Google
If you don’t already have it on your phone, you’ll need to download the Google Photos app from the Play Store.

Once you’ve installed it, here’s how to make sure all your photos are backed up:

1. Open the Google Photos app and tap the menu icon at the top left (three lines).

2. Then choose Settings > Backup & sync.

3. Make sure the correct ‘Backup Account’ is selected and tap the switch to turn on Backup & sync.

Restore your data to your new Samsung phone

This is the easy part. When you’re going through the initial setup of your new phone, you’ll be asked to sign in to your Google account:

1. When you see the ‘Google sign in’ screen, enter your Gmail address then tap Next.

2. Then type your password and tap Next.

3. Agree to the terms of service and privacy policy by tapping I Agree.

4. Next, you’ll see any backups you’ve made. Simply choose the most recent backup to restore all of your data to your new Samsung.

Hopefully, that's helped you make sure all your data and photos are secure, and you're up and running with your shiny new Samsung phone.
