Calls Working but NO Data connection (Exclamation mark in signal bars)

Hi, went out this morning to send a parcel and sent a whatsapp message to confirm but the message didn’t send, after trying airplane mode and restarting the phone the little exclamation mark wouldn’t go away.

I made a call and that worked so went home and tried a few things from the internet about fixing this but so far nothing has worked.

Android by the way.

Resetting network, still exclamation mark.

Turning off the phone for 30 seconds (I did about 10 minutes and pulled / cleaned the sim card), still exclamation mark.

Checked other settings like data limit (don’t have one) Roaming, nope still exclamation mark.

Help, thank you!

Hi @EyeDeeLady

Thank you for getting in touch, and I’m sorry to hear you’re experiencing this issue.

From what you’ve described being able to make calls but seeing an exclamation mark and not being able to use data—it does sound like a mobile data or network connection issue rather than a full loss of service.

As you’ve already tried some key steps, please try the following additional checks:

  • Check Mobile Data is enabled

Go to Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs / Mobile Network and ensure Mobile Data is switched on

  • Check Access Point Name (APN) settings

Go to Settings → Mobile Network → Access Point Names and ensure the correct APN is selected (you can also reset to default if unsure)

  • Set preferred network type to 4G/LTE

Go to Settings → Mobile Network → Preferred network type and select 4G/LTE

  • Manually select a network

Go to Settings → Mobile Network → Network operators
Turn off automatic selection and try connecting to a network manually

  • Check for any app/data restrictions

Ensure data saver or app restrictions are not blocking apps like WhatsApp

  • Try the SIM in another phone (if possible)

This helps determine if the issue is with the SIM or the handset

Hi, thanks for getting back to me.

I double checked everything above except using the sim in another phone (only an old big sim phone unfortunately), although I’m sitting here watching it switch between:

No data (exclamation mark)

4G

4G+

A mixture of all the above phone just sitting doing nothing, it’s not fast switching like a glitch just every few minutes seconds…

EDIT: It seems to have settled on 2 bars 4G+ no exclamation mark…

Nothing I did fixed it but it seems to be getting better 🤷

Hi @EyeDeeLady.

Thanks for the update.  I’m glad to hear it seems to be settling a bit now.

From what you’ve described, the fluctuating signal and the earlier exclamation mark would be best checked on your account to rule out any data provisioning issues on our side.

Could you please contact us directly via live chat here: https://www.idmobile.co.uk/live-chat.

That way, we can securely access your account and investigate why the exclamation mark was appearing and make sure everything is set up correctly.

Thanks,

Marquerita
