Question

Data speed drops at random times

Data speed drops often, even when the phone shows full connection. When running speed checks, it shows speeds between 1 and 9Mbps, where it normally is much higher.
I’ve tested with several devices, and restarting the devices doesn’t help. I also tested the devices using a different provider, and then they have full speed.
I have unlimited data so it’s not because I’m out of data, I can’t figure out why the speed keeps dropping.
It happens at random times during the week and have been going on for weeks.

    Hi @sop12345678

I’m sorry to hear you’ve been experiencing ongoing issues with your data speeds.

As you’ve already tested multiple devices, restarted them, and confirmed the issue does not occur with another provider, this does suggest the issue may be related to network coverage or how the device is connecting to the network in your area.

As a troubleshooting step, we would recommend switching the handset to 4G only mode to see if this improves the stability and speed of the connection, as sometimes devices can struggle when switching between 4G and 5G signals.

You can usually do this by:

    • Going to Settings
    • Selecting Mobile Network or Connections
    • Choosing Preferred Network Type
    • Selecting 4G/LTE only

Please monitor the connection after making this change to see whether the service improves.

    Hi @sop12345678

Is the data speed issue happening all the time, or is it intermittent where the speeds drop and then improve again after some time?

Could you also please provide your postcode so we can check whether there are any known coverage issues in your area?

    Hi @sop12345678

Thank you for getting back to us.

We’ve checked the coverage for EH11 2TH and we’re currently unable to see any reported issues showing for the area at this time.

If you haven’t already, we’d recommend trying the following:

    General checks

    • Restart the device
    • Toggle Airplane Mode ON for 30 seconds, then OFF
    • Test in another nearby location if possible
    • Remove and reinsert the SIM (if physical SIM)

    iPhone

    • Go to Settings
    • Tap General
    • Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone
    • Tap Reset
    • Select Reset Network Settings

    Android

    • Go to Settings
    • Tap General Management (or System)
    • Tap Reset
    • Select Reset Network Settings

Please note this will remove saved WiFi and Bluetooth connections.

If the issue continues after completing the above, we’d recommend contacting our Live Chat team as they can look into whether a replacement SIM may be appropriate.
