iPhone 16 not connecting internet when out and about

Hi. When I am out and about I have great difficulty being able to ‘google’ with my iPhone 16. Call quality is not that good either when out and about.  When at home, too often I have to move around the house to get a better signal despite wifi calling being on.  When it comes to internet searches whilst out and about I invariably end up using my wife’s iPhone SE 2020 to carry out searches.

Some of the settings are as follows:

Personal Hotspot OFF

Network Selection is set to Automatic.

Voice and Data currently set to 5G Auto but have tried 4G but still no improvement.

Data Mode set to Standard.

I kept my old number and the phone came with another number.  I have just noticed that Network Provider Services uses the ‘other’ number that the phone ca,me with. I don’t know if that affects anything though.

Any suggestions to resolve this problem will be greatly appreciated.

Hi @petersteadman52,

Thanks for getting in touch, and I’m sorry to hear you’ve been having ongoing issues with both data speeds and call quality on your iPhone 16.

As you’ve already tried switching between 5G and 4G, the next thing we’d recommend is refreshing the network registration and ensuring the phone is fully updated following the number transfer.

The “other” number you mentioned can sometimes remain partially registered within iPhone network services after a number transfer, which may occasionally cause issues with network functionality and service stability.

Please try the following steps:

Update your number on the iPhone

  • Go to Settings
  • Tap Phone
  • Tap My Number
  • Ensure your correct transferred number is showing
  • If the temporary/original number appears anywhere, remove it and save the correct number

Reset Network Settings

  • Go to Settings
  • Tap General
  • Select Transfer or Reset iPhone
  • Tap Reset
  • Choose Reset Network Settings

(Please note this will remove saved WiFi and Bluetooth connections.)

Additional recommended steps

  • Restart the phone after the reset
  • Keep Network Selection on Automatic
  • Try setting Voice & Data to 4G only for a full day to test stability
  • Ensure WiFi Calling is enabled:
    • Settings > Phone > WiFi Calling
  • Ensure iOS is fully up to date

As your wife’s device appears to work better in the same locations, this does suggest the issue may be linked specifically to the network registration/settings on your handset rather than general coverage alone.

We hope the above helps improve both the signal and mobile data performance for you.

Regards,
