IPv6 Support

Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone knows when iD will be getting IPv6? I’m considering switching to iD but I often have issues surrounding CGNAT, which I get around by using IPv6.

I’ve got an iD SIM at the moment for testing which does not support IPv6

Many thanks!

Hey there @Crystalyne, thank you for reaching out and for the question!

Unfortunately, we don’t have anything to announce regarding this at this current time.

We’re always looking for ways to improve, and who knows, this could be a way we look to do so in the future :D

But for now, we have no update to give regarding this I’m afraid, sorry about that!

Have a lovely day!

Thanks,

Tyler

I would like to add I would also like to see IPv6 support.

I self host services like Home Assistant which is a smart home system. There is a very nice mobile client for it that lets me control my home including things like my alarm system, smart locks and CCTV which I need access to from my phone when I’m not at home. Since newer home broadband providers can’t get the IPv4 address space they need they’re also now using CGNAT which means I’m unable to access my Home Assistant system from my phone without paying them extra for a static IPv4 IP. My home broadband provider already supports IPv6 so I can expose my Home Assistant system over IPv6 but that’s no use if I can’t access it over IPv6 from my phone. If ID Mobile can’t supply this then I’ll be switching to another network as soon as I’m able to find one that will.

IPv6 would help me as well - as the PSTN (copper wire) telephone network in the UK will be switched off soon, I’ve been experimenting with VOIP over mobile data.  Whilst it does work (most of the time) over the iDmobile network on IPv4, because of CGNAT the VOIP providers system “looses” the IP address of my computer and any incoming calls have no speech although the the other party can hear me.  My VOIP provider assures me this will all stop once I move to IPv6.

So, can I also request iDmoble offer IPv6 please.

Hi @bshephard - if you’re interested I can give you some pointers on your query.  I’m at IT guy who also runs home assistant w/ remote access from the app on my phone.  There are ways round exposing the system without the hassles of CGNAT.  Get in touch if you’d like a hand.  Alex H.

@alex_harris Thanks for the offer but I also work in IT and I’m aware of all the work-arounds and use them myself so I don’t have to expose ports to the outside world. I manage three HomeAssistant instances. I manage one on behalf of my parents who are non technical. I wanted them to be able to use the HA mobile app from their phone when away from home so they can check CCTV and activate and deactivate their alrm systems etc but it has to just work for them. I’m technical enough to be able to debug a VPN issue or something but it’s too much to expect my 80 year old mother to be able to do that.

The fact is we need services with connection to the whole internet not just IPv4 address space. My parents  switched ISP to a new fibre line just after I set up their home assistant and that ISP only offers CGNAT on IPv4 by default without you pay extra for a static IPv4 address. They have all the IPv6 addresses they could ever possibly need and the only barrier to using them for our use case is the fact that not a single mobile provider in the UK currently offers IPv6 support. I’m currently with ID but if another mobile network is going to roll out IPv6 then I’ll be taking my business there and switching my parents over too. I don’t see why millions of people should have to pay extra for a static IPv4 address they only need because other ISP’s are dragging their heels implementing IPv6. A connection to the internet should be a connection to all address space not just IPv4 address space.

Hi @bshephard - understood.  I totally agree with your comments.

I may be wrong on this but I think EE are offering ipv6 on their network - at least that’s how it looks on this pfsense with Gigaclear as the primary WAN and EE as the failover…..

I'm an IT professional too and started using ipv6 because that's the future and there is no annoying short supply of static IP addresses

I think I need to move from ID Mobile as there is no ipv6 support and I'm not waiting. Lebara don't support it either.

I know EE does, but it is a lot more expensive.
