Network Speed Cap confirmation

Hi all,

Yesterday, three UK have confirmed on PAYG and new sim contracts they will be capping download speeds to 25/50Mbps and 100Mbps respectively. They will be releasing an add on so you can pay for unlimited speeds. Which of course is another company being greedy (apparently Vodafone have been doing this for a while, since the merger Three is inheriting this business model).

Will ID mobile applying this cap to their mobile broadband customers also and what will this look like for each sim plan?

thank you

Hi @Vowxy23,

Thanks for raising this it’s a really good question, especially with the recent changes being discussed.

You are correct that Three UK has introduced speed caps for some new plans, with reports confirming caps of around 50Mbps for certain customers, alongside the possibility of paid add-ons for faster speeds . Similarly, Vodafone UK has already been moving toward tiered speeds and “speed boost” add-ons on some plans

So, what about iD Mobile?

At the moment, iD Mobile has not announced any changes to introduce fixed speed caps on its plans.

However, I do need to set expectations clearly:

  • iD Mobile operates on the Three network, so any network-level policies or future changes could potentially have an impact.
  • That said, your plan allowances (data, speeds, etc.) are governed by iD Mobile’s own terms and pricing structure, not directly by Three’s retail plan changes.
  • Currently, iD Mobile plans are not advertised with specific capped speed tiers like 25/50/100Mbps.

Will this change in future?

While there’s no confirmed change for iD Mobile right now, the industry trend is clearly moving toward:

  • Tiered speeds
  • Paid prioritisation / “speed boost” add-ons

If anything like this were to be introduced, it would:

  • Be clearly communicated in advance
  • Be reflected in updated terms and plan details
