Question

Unlimited Data Speed Throttling

Hi, I am a heavy data user with an unlimited Sim. In the last month I have used 147GB. Tonight my speeds have dropped from a reasonable 4g/5g speed to around 5mbps. I have tested this with numerous devices, checked the coverage checker and service status. Everything appears normal and nothing is showing as having any issues. I am under the impression that ID did not throttle speed after a certain data usage after a reply by an employee here -

“In the UK: Unlimited really means unlimited , no speed caps or data limits for domestic use.”

If there is indeed a throttle after a certain data usage then the reply above is misleading. I have not been abroad or roamed on my sim.

Can you confirm whether there is a data cap at which point speeds are slowed to an unusable speed? If so, what is that cap? If there is no cap, what is likely to be causing this considering everything appears to be working fine on everything I have checked.

Many thanks in advance

Hi @Bilzey,

Thanks for getting in touch.

There is no data cap or hidden speed throttle based on usage for unlimited plans in the UK. “Unlimited” means you can continue to use data without a set usage limit, and we don’t apply a fixed slowdown after a certain amount of usage like 147GB.

If you’re experiencing reduced speeds, this is more likely to be caused by local network conditions or congestion, even if the coverage checker and service status pages are currently showing everything as normal.

As a first step, we’d recommend:

  • Turning Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds, then off again
  • Restarting your device(s)
  • Testing in a different location if possible (even a short distance can make a difference)
  • Manually selecting the network again in your device settings
  • Resetting network settings on your device if the issue continues

If the problem persists, please contact our Live Chat team so they can investigate further and check your connection in more detail.

Hi @Nathan Etherton,

We're sorry to hear you've noticed a drop in your speeds.

The recent merger between Three and Vodafone doesn't mean customers automatically move onto Vodafone's network, and it shouldn't by itself cause a reduction in your speeds. iD Mobile customers continue to use the iD Mobile network as normal.

Speed can vary depending on factors such as network congestion, signal strength, and local demand at the time you're using your service.

If you're consistently experiencing much slower speeds, let us know the postcode where you're seeing the issue and the make and model of your device (without sharing any personal or account information). We'll be happy to check for any known issues in your area and advise further.

I am also finding with an unlimited data SIM the data is severely throttled.  I have ID mobile SIMs in a TI-MR6500v 4g modem and also in two Samsung A13 mobiles. We are very close to a mast on channel 3 and the mobile phones regularly get 35mbs download and 30mbs upload.

Note TI-MR6500v modem has wifi disabled so the antenna just handles mobile.

Mast is here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/cY6xtW5Dek7mfyqH9

Initially the 4g modem was getting around 20mbs+ download, but after 5 weeks  it has dropped to consistently below 10mbs sometimes as low as 5mbs - always with upload at 30-45mbs. If I connect via Surfshark VPN the download goes up to around 20mbs which is a classic indicator of throttling based on data type. There is no variation by the time of day I have tried it.

I have swapped SIMS and the throttling stays with the 4g Modem. The modem MAC is not editable or I could try that.

I have moved into the next contract month and it remains the same. Monthly usage is around 140gb.

So contrary to everything being said and the ID mobile documentation data would appear to be throttled on some basis. What is more galling is that I have spent time and money with external antennas and repositioning many times to no benefit.

Is there an answer?

Hi @GGW,

We're sorry to hear about the issues you've been experiencing.

To clarify, we don't throttle data usage on our plans. However, as the SIM is currently being used in a modem, which isn't supported equipment on our network, we're unable to investigate this further from our side.

To allow us to carry out any troubleshooting, the SIM would need to be used in a compatible mobile handset. If you experience the same issue while using the SIM in a handset, please let us know and we'll be happy to look into it further.

OK.

If the position is that sim only plans are only for specific equipment then your web site should say so.

On the same subject if my mobile Samsung A13 is supported and should not be restricted will this also apply to tethered data. I guess I will test and find out.

Hi @GGW,

Thanks for your feedback, and we're sorry for any confusion caused.

A Samsung A13 is fully compatible with the iD Mobile network, so it shouldn't be subject to the same limitations as a modem or other unsupported equipment. Tethering (using your phone as a personal hotspot) is also supported on compatible handsets, so you should be able to test this with your A13.

You can check whether a device is compatible with the iD Mobile network here:

We appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback regarding the wording on our website, and we'll make sure it's passed on internally.

Thank you Gemma,

I have tested A13 tethering with hotspot, USB tethering and USB  ethernet adaptor and it does work as you describe. Hotspot is naturally the slowest, but USB Ethernet adaptor offers the same tethered performance as the native A13 using the basic Google Speedtest and the comprehensive Cloudfare Speedtest as far as can be measured. Generally around the 30down /31up down mark

As to why the download speed is down to 7-10mbs on the 4g modem is either a factor of the modem or intentional throttling triggered by the network detecting an unsupported equipment type.

TI-MR6500v 4g modem router does give enough throughput for general use for the two of us including one session of digital streaming and reasonable Voip. I can plug into either mobile phone direct or hotspot it if I need high speed or extra bandwidth. With the changes going on the 4g modem may get nobbled one day on my plan - who knows. Either way we have been with ID mobile some 10 years an the plans offer excellent value for the 3 sims we currently are using (2 x 12gb + 1 x unlimited) so I can’t complain.

Other interested partied looking at 4g Broadband take note.

Thanks again..

Geoff
