Wifi calling on Google Pixel 4a 4G?

Hi. I’m not an ID mobile customer but I have a Pixel 4a 4G phone and I’m having difficulty finding a provider that supports Wifi calling for this phone. There’s a Wifi calling page on ID mobile’s website that contains a dropdown list of devices and this phone is listed but I don’t trust that so if anyone still owns this phone I’d like to check whether they have Wifi calling working and whether they had to do anything extra like installing Graphene (probably beyond me) or turning airplane mode on in order to get it to work.

I have a weak O2 signal at home and the other three networks are non existent.

Alternatively if anyone has any idea of providers that definitely support wifi calling on this phone please let me know. O2 don’t, Giffgaff don’t, Voxi don’t, Talkmobile don’t, waiting to hear from Asda (guessing not), haven’t looked into EE yet.

Thanks in advance.

Hi @Nixer ,

The Pixel 4a is officially listed as a compatible device for Wi-Fi Calling on the iD Mobile network.

I would recommend taking a month-to-month contract so you can test whether it works as expected. If it doesn’t, you can cancel within the returns period.

Hi Michael. Thanks. The cheapest 30 day SIM I can find is £6. If I get that and cannot get Wifi calling to work within the 30 days (including after contacting ID mobile for help with it if necessary) will I be able to get a refund of that £6? I tried a Three SIM a year or so ago and there is absolutely no Three signal in my house so if Wifi calling doesn’t work for me the ID mobile SIM would be of no use to me. £6 is quite a lot of money for me and if this doesn’t work I am going to have to try a couple of other networks that I have been told might work and so costs potentially start to mount up. Plus I will have to keep my existing provider’s SIM going (also £6 a month) until I find something that works, or give up and start saving for a refurb mobile phone that is newer.

Hi @Nixer.

If you choose a 1-month SIM-only contract, you won’t be tied into a long-term agreement. This means you are free to test the service, including Wi-Fi Calling, and if it doesn’t work for you, you can leave at the end of the billing cycle without being liable for any early termination fees.

You would only be required to pay for the usage within that month, so there would be no ongoing commitment beyond that if you decide to cancel.

If you do decide to go ahead you can reach out to our Sales team on 0800 049 0250  or via LiveChat on https://www.idmobile.co.uk/live-chat.

Thanks,

Hi @Nixer

Have you checked that Wifi Calling and VoLTE (4G) are enabled on your phone?

Steps to Enable VoLTE (4G Calling) on Pixel 4a:
  • Check Settings: Open Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Network (or SIMs) > Enable 4G Calling or VoLTE
  • Alternative Method (Hidden Settings): If the toggle is missing, open the  phones number dialling number pad and type *#*#4636#*#*, select Phone information, and check the VoLTE Provisioned switch.
Steps to Enable Wi-Fi Calling:
  1. Open Settings: Go to your phone's Settings menu.
  2. Network & Internet: Tap on Network & internet
  3. SIMs/Mobile Network: Select SIMs or your network provider name.
  4. Wi-Fi Calling: Scroll down and tap Wi-Fi calling then toggle On
  5. Alternative: Open the Phone app, tap the three-dot menu, select Settings> Wi-Fi Calling
Important Notes for UK Users:!
  • Network Support:The option may not appear if your carrier has not provisioned your SIM for Wi-Fi calling.
  • VoLTE/4G Calling: Ensure 4G calling (VoLTE) is also enabled, as they often work together.
  • VPNs: Wi-Fi calling may not work if a VPN is active.

If you have VoLTE and Wifi Calling are enabled then your best bet is to contact the Live Chat via this link (The Live Chat team are available 9am - 8pm Monday to Friday, and 9am - 6pm Saturday and Sunday) to discuss if your SIM/Account has been provisioned properly for these:-

 https://www.idmobile.co.uk/live-chat

When you contact the Live Chat :-

Type ‘talk to a person’ in the dialogue box and this will bypass the unhelpful chatbot.

Please be patient as the agents handle a few conversations at any one time so there will be a delay in connecting with an available agent and also any replies to your query.

You state that you may try other networks to see if they work better? Before you do so, do you know anyone on those networks that you can ask to try their SIM cards in your phone to see if they work? Will save you time and £ in the long run.

Good Luck x

Hi @Decembersangel72  thanks for your detailed post. @Nixer I completely understand where you’re coming from, especially with the cost concerns and wanting to make sure things work before committing.

I just wanted to check in and see if you’ve been able to make a decision, or if you’re still weighing up your options?

If you do decide to give it a try and need any help along the way (especially with getting WiFi Calling set up), we’re here to support you.

Thanks,

@Marquerita T Thanks. I’m still weighing it up and waiting to hear back from other providers that I have contacted before I spend any money.

I know, that’s why I am asking here and elsewhere for other people’s experiences but it seems hardly anyone still has this phone. Unfortunately I don’t know anyone who has a physical SIM that I can borrow. To be clear I haven’t tried ID mobile yet, it’s not that I’ve tried and it isn’t working. But of course no network will promise that it will work and none of them are confident enough that it will work to say that they will refund me if it doesn’t.

Hi @Nixer

If a network states that they support a certain make/model of phone for Wi-Fi Calling  then it should work BUT this all depends on if your handset is set up and enabled for the use of it as this is the main reason for it failing. These settings are controlled by the installed software. If you can see Wi-Fi Calling as an option in your settings then it is available when connected to a network that supports it. If you can not see this option then the software updates, that are controlled by the network that the phone was initially sold by, have not happened to enable it and so you would have to be connected to them for the relevant software update to enable use of this option e.g. if a phone was initially sold by Vodafone then they will have installed software that is controlled by themselves and any updates will only occur when connected to their network. To get past this you will need to install ‘unbranded’ software which means that you would then get all software updates from the handsets manufacturer i.e. Google (for your phone). I had the same problem, I had a Samsung Galaxy phone locked to Vodafone software (as they were the initial seller of the phone) and couldn’t access VoLTE or Wi-Fi Calling until I installed unbranded software and I got the relevant updates from Samsung to use these and then all new updates going forward.

The good thing about iD Mobile and similar networks, is that they have month to month packages and at reasonable prices and so you can get a SIM on for one of these for as little as £6 to ‘try and see’ and if it doesn’t work then you can request a PAC code and move to another.
https://www.idmobile.co.uk/sim-only-deals

You have to decide whether the £ you pay to ‘try and see’ with a network is better than having to spend more in replacing your handset.

Good luck x
